Legalized/certified translations: Ireland

A sworn translation consists of a copy of the original document bearing an apostille, accompanied by the translated text, an affidavit, and the requisite duty stamps.

Irish certificates MUST NOT be legalized by means of Apostille.

Fees

• translations into Italian (minimum fee 60€)
• asseverazione (sworn statement) (35€)
• duty stamps (in 2023 a 16€ duty stamp on the 1st page of the translation and every 5th page)
• delivery cost of the document if requested by the client

Affidavit/sworn statement

Swearing an Affidavit is usually required when you are presenting your translation as evidence in court, Giudice di Pace (Justice of the peace), Notai (Italian Notary Public). In Italian, it is the ‘verbale di giuramento’.

Apostille–> it is not requested within EU

A legalized translation is carried out by a professional translator and includes their signed declaration to this effect. In the Ireland, a certified translation serves as the equivalent of a sworn translation. Certified translations have no legal value in Italy, unless it is provided to an Italian consulate in Ireland.

A legalized translation is a literal, word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed “Certificate of Accuracy”. Unlike many other countries, Ireland does not have “sworn” or “government-licensed” translators; instead, any professional translator or company can certify a document by attesting to its accuracy

The certification of a translation can only be issued upon submission of the original document and for the following categories of documents only:

• Irish certificates for use in Italian public offices

The term “legalized” typically refers to two additional layers of verification depending on the document’s destination: 

• Notarization: A Notary Public verifies the identity of the person signing the certification statement. This is often required for court or specialized legal proceedings.
