What language competence exams are required for a master’s degree in Europe?

Level B2 is the absolute minimum required:

IELTS Academic score ranges from 5.5

Cambridge English: FCE

TOEFL iBT, often known as iBT, requires a minimum score of 70-100 on the Home Edition and a score of 500-600 on the paper-based test.

Native English speakers or those with an international diploma that allows them to be admitted to a specific university may be exempt from taking an English language test.

Erasmus Mundus Master in Cyberspace, Behaviour and E-therapy (CYBER)	Proof of proficiency in English language (IELTS 6.0; TOEFL, University certificate, etc.).
Erasmus Mundus Master in Photonics	The tuition language is English. Students are notably expected to produce a Master Thesis in English. A strong command of written and oral English is therefore requested. Applicants will have to demonstrate during application an English language proficiency equivalent to level B2.

Erasmus Mundus Master in Science in Health Management in Aquaculture	The applicant must be proficient in English. English language proficiency can be met by providing a certificate (not older than 2 years) of one of the following tests: TOEFL IBT 92, with subscore for speaking 23 ACADEMIC IELTS 6,5 overall score, with a min. of 6 for writing and 6 for speaking CAMBRIDGE English CAE (Advanced) score between 176-210 or Grade C Cambridge FCE/B2 Certificate, score between 176-190 or Grade A note! Erasmus Mundus on Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology	Fluency in English (Level B2 under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Food Research, Development and Innovation	English proficiency level equivalent to language level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (Required)
Food Safety	Students must have good knowledge of English to take the master’s degree, in order to read and analyse documents and scientific papers. Classes will be taught in Catalan and Spanish.
Fundamental Principles of Data Science	Given that the master’s degree is taught entirely in English, applicants must certify that they have at least level B2 English.
General Health Psychology	Applicants must be able to work with scientific texts written in English.
Genetics and Genomics	Students must prove that they have a sound knowledge of English, as many classes and seminars, as well as most of the teaching material, may be in this language.
Global Challenges for Sustainability	Global Challenges for Sustainability English language certification is necessary for programme admission. C1 is the required level. Students with B2 level will be considered in conjunction with other admission criteria but must attain C1 level before programme registration. Download the English Accepted Certificates.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Biomedical Engineering	Students who take the master’s degree must also have level B2 English.
Institutions and Political Economy	The master’s degree is taught in English. Consequently, students must prove that they have a good knowledge of the language (level B2 or equivalent) through official certificates such as IELTS or TOEFL, or they must show that they have pursued higher education in English in the past.
Integrative Physiology	English proficiency level equivalent to language level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (Required)
International Business	The master’s degree is taught in English, which is why students must present an official certificate evidencing a good command of this language. Candidates must have at least level B2 English (the language of instruction), according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages, or an equivalent qualification.
International Development / Desenvolupament Internacional	If English is not your first language, you should provide evidence of your English language skills. IBEI accepts the following language tests: TOEFL: 90 iBT (IBEI code: 6567) IELTS: 6.5 Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced CAE or C2 Proficiency CPE. International Security	A high level of English is required. The following qualifications are accepted: TOEFL (at least 90 on the Internet or 550 paper-based), IELTS (6.5 or above), Cambridge Advanced Certificate (A-C) and Cambridge Proficiency exam (A-C).
Internationalization: Economic, Commercial, Legal and Political Aspects	Need to have a competent level of Spanish and English (level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or its equivalent). Students who are not native speakers of either of these languages must be able to provide documentation accrediting their level of competence: IELTS or Cambridge (English) and DELE (Spanish).
Introduction to Mental Health Research	Certificate showing level B1 in English reading comprehension on the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Labour Economics	As the degree is taught entirely in English, knowledge of this language equal to or higher than level B2 is required, which students must certify (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge or equivalent degrees) or by demonstrating that they have previously studied higher education in English.
Leadership and Management in Nursing	Knowledge of oral and written English.
Management and Direction of Libraries and Information Services (master’s degrees with biennial enrolment)	In addition to previous university training, and in accordance with current regulations, master’s degree applicants must also have English language skills at level B1.
Marketing and Market Research	Since the degree is taught in English, applicants should also possess a sufficient level of comprehension to be able to follow the course in this language.
Master’s Degree Erasmus Mundus in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling	Level B2 of English or higher.
Medicines, Health and the Healthcare System	Candidates should have English level B1 ECFR.
Meteorology	Have a good command of English is required.
Mineral Resources and Geological Hazards	English proficiency level equivalent to language level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (Required)
Molecular Biotechnology	English proficiency level equivalent to language level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (Preferable)
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology	Proof of English proficiency test (only IELTS or TOEFL is accepted) All applicants who have not obtained a previous diploma in a programme taught in English in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America must submit a certificate proving their proficiency in English. For all others the test is COMPULSORY!
Neurosciences	Credit is given for knowledge of English
Occupational Safety and Health: Prevention of Occupational Hazards	Students should have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent, as all the classes refer to documents in this language.
Oceanography and Marine Environmental Management	Students should have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent, as all the classes refer to documents in this language.
Organic Chemistry	Sufficient knowledge of at least two of the languages of instruction, one of which must be English (level B1).
Paleobiology and Fossil Record	To accredit the level B2 of English foreign language (equivalent to the First Certificate) the minimum to study the master.
People and Team Management and Development in Organizations	Candidates should also have foreign language proficiency (English) equivalent to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Photonics / Fotònica	The tuition language is English. Students are notably expected to produce a Master Thesis in English. A strong command of written and oral English is therefore requested. Applicants will have to demonstrate during application an English language proficiency equivalent to level B2.
Physical Activity and Health	In addition to the criteria stipulated by university regulations, this master’s degree also includes the following admission requirement: minimum level of English B1 or equivalent (this is an admission requirement, so it is not weighted in the selection process). In relation to this point, and as stated in the program’s verification report, in the face of any circumstance or incident occurring in the admission process, including non-certification of the B1 English level or equivalent, it will be the Commission of Master’s degree, or failing that, the program coordinator, who will be able to decide for or against the applicant through a personalized interview.
Physics of Complex Systems and Biophysics	Students must have a level of English equivalent to at least B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Plant Biology, Genomics and Biotechnology	Basic knowledge of English (level B1 CEFR or higher). In the event that they do not hold an accrediting document, students may request a comprehension and expression test from the committee of the master’s degree in Biology, Genomics and Plant Biotechnology.
Principles of Care and Education for Diabetes Sufferers	To have an intermediate level of English is required.
Production and Artistic Research	English proficiency level equivalent to language level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (Required)
Psychogerontology	Credit will be given for the ability to read scientific texts in English.
Psychosocial Intervention	Candidates must have a good level of Spanish and Catalan comprehension, and be able to read scientific texts in English.
Public Management	Level B2.02 or higher in English on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
Pure and Applied Logic (master’s degrees with biennial enrolment)	The level of English required to take this master’s degree is B1 ECFR. Students must be able to understand class explanations and complete written exercises and assignments in English.
Quantum Science and Technology	English proficiency level equivalent to language level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (Required)
Renewable and Sustainable Energy	Candidates must have a good command of English.
Research and Educational Change	Knowledge of foreign languages (Required).
Research in Behaviour and Cognition	Basic knowledge of English at level B1 is required.
Research in Language and Literature Teaching	Candidates must have Spanish level B2 and English level B1.
Reservoir Geology and Geophysics	Students should also have a good working knowledge of English, because all subjects will be delivered in English.
Science and Integrated Management of Water	English and French may be used to teach part of some optional subjects (if so, this will be stated in the corresponding course plans). Students are not required to hold official certification of their proficiency in these languages, but those who intend to take the double degree must complete an intensive French or English course to ensure that they have a sufficient level of proficiency.
Sociology: Social Transformations and Innovation	Candidates must have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent, and Spanish level B2 ECFR or equivalent. Certificates are required. If students cannot submit a certificate, the Admissions Committee may organize a face-to-face or online meeting to assess their language knowledge.
Specialized Communication	Students must have an English level equivalent to B1 CEFR and a good command of Catalan and Spanish.
Sport Business Management	Students should demonstrate a good command of Spanish and English (level B1 CEFR).
Sporting Performance: Specialization and Elite Competition	This master’s degree also includes the following admission requirement: minimum level of English B1 or equivalent (this is an admission requirement, so it is not weighted in the selection process).
Statistics and Operations Research	Knowledge of English (level B2 required).
Sustainable Gastronomy	Have an acceptable level of languages, essential to train and study the sector at an international level.
Teacher Training in Compulsory Secondary and Upper Secondary School Education, Vocational Training and Languages	Access to the master’s degree requires demonstrable knowledge of a second language equivalent to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling	Level B2 of English or higher.
Tourism Business Management	Have an adequate level of languages, essential for training and your professional career.
Training of Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language	Students whose first language is not Spanish must demonstrate a high level of oral and written skills in this language (level C1 or C2 ECFR). Candidates should have at least English level B2 ECFR. Credit is also given for knowledge of other languages (for example, French, German or Italian).
Translational Medicine	All candidates must hold a minimum level of English language (level B2 CEFR, First Certificate or equivalent).
Urban Design: Art, City, Society (master’s degrees with biennial enrolment)	Candidates should also have a good level of English (reading and speaking) and Portuguese (reading and speaking). Candidates must have English and Spanish language competence at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or higher. Non-native speakers must provide evidence of their Spanish-language competence in the form of a diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language or a certificate for B2 issued by the Cervantes Institute.
